Never tired of beautiful architecture⊠or really good food. đ€
We were so lucky to have beautiful sunny days in York, which made exploring this incredible city even better. We took a train from London King’s Cross to York, and the journey takes about 2 hours. Itâs smooth and scenicâif you can, book tickets in advance; I booked mine on the LNER webpage. You can also reserve your seats when booking ahead. Pack light; carry-ons are your best friend.
One of the trip’s highlights was meeting Chef Neil Bentinck at Skosh, watching him cook from the open kitchen, and, of course, tasting his food. Skosh is all about nibbles and small plates, combining British ingredients with flavors and techniques from around the world, including influences from India, Japan, and Southeast Asiaâespecially Thailand, a cuisine Neil particularly loves. Neilâs father was from India, and his mother from York. Every dish had so many layers of flavor. âš Reservations are recommended, since Skosh is very popular and can book up quickly. Walk-in seats are also available in the bar area.
The setting has its own story, too. Skosh sits on Micklegate, just beyond Micklegate Bar, a 12th-century gateway into the historic city.
If you visit York, put Skosh on your list. I already know I need to come back and try more. đœïž
And while youâre there⊠wander through The Shambles, visit the magnificent York Minster, walk the ancient city walls, and basically eat your way through town. And if youâre interested in ghosts, take one of the ghost tours. đ» York is wonderfully walkable, making it easy to explore. For a relaxed experience, spend at least two to three days in York so you can soak in the sights, enjoy leisurely meals, and not feel rushed.
If you love horse racing, August is also home to the Ebor Festival at York Racecourse. đ And yes, the outfits are part of the fun. Bring a great one! York in August can be warm during the day but sometimes breezy or rainy, so pack a light jacket or shawl and comfortable shoes for walking or standing. A classic hat or fascinator is always welcome, and many people go all out. Donât worry if you forget yoursâyouâll find plenty of excuses to shop for one while youâre there. It is also a good idea to bring sunscreen, as much of the event is outside, and maybe a small umbrella just in case. This is England, after all!
We stayed at The Grand, York, which was perfect for usâbeautiful, with a great bar and restaurant, incredibly close to the train station, and within easy walking distance of everything. We walked over from the station with our carry-ons. Easy!
Beautiful architecture, centuries of history, great food, and a city made for wandering.
Until we meet again, York. đ€đŹđ§
